What is Psoriatic Arthritis?
Psoriasis (PsO) is an autoimmune skin condition characterised by rapid skin turnover, resulting in silvery scales on red plaques. About 20% of such patients also develop an inflammatory arthritis.
What are the Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis?
Psoriatic Arthritis usually presents as asymmetrical swelling of joints and tendons, swelling of the entire digit (“sausage fingers or toes”), or tender insertions of tendons (enthesitis) like plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow. It may be triggered by physical strain, infection or emotional stress.
What are the Treatments Available for Psoriatic Arthritis?
“Silver bullet” therapies targeting TNF and IL17 are very effective treatments for both the skin as well as joint manifestations. JAK inhibitors and IL23 inhibitors have recently been shown to be very effective as well.
